Mother & Child Healthcare & Welfare

World Health Organization estimates that over half a million women die at childbirth yearly worldwide, with about 99 percent of these deaths from developing countries. Every  year in  Nigeria,  there  are  about  40,000  maternal deaths  which  account  for about  14%  of  the  global  total. A woman’s chance of dying from pregnancy and childbirth in Nigeria is 1 in 13.

These outrageous deaths in Nigeria have been attributed to poor access and utilization of mother and child healthcare services. Aside healthcare challenges (SDG 3), mothers and their children in Enugu are still faced with general welfare challenges like violence against women, lack of economic means (SDG 5), and lack of education for the children (SDG 4).

Custoscare Foundation intervenes in these areas by accelerating access and utilization of maternal and child healthcare services in Enugu state with the hope of achieving an improved mother and child healthcare and welfare by 100% in Enugu state by 2030.

Our work in Maternal and Child Healthcare and Welfare

Mama Care Initiative: Priotising Maternal and Child Health

At Custos Care Foundation, we believe that every mother deserves access to quality healthcare, support, and essential resources to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy, delivery, and postnatal experience. This belief drives our Mama Care Initiative, a programme dedicated to improving maternal and child health across Enugu State.

What Mama Care Initiative Offers:

Free Maternal Healthcare – We have enrolled over 1,700 pregnant women across Enugu’s 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in a one-year health insurance programme, guaranteeing them access to antenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal services.

Health Education & Awareness – We equip pregnant women and nursing mothers with vital knowledge on safe delivery, proper nutrition, breastfeeding, and family planning, empowering them to make informed health decisions.

Community Outreach & Advocacy – Through targeted campaigns and grassroots engagement, we continue to raise awareness about maternal health, encouraging more women to access healthcare services and advocating for policies that prioritise safe motherhood.

Why Mama Care Matters

Our goal is to reduce maternal and infant mortality, improve health outcomes, and create a support system where no mother feels alone. At Custos Care Foundation, we are committed to ensuring that every woman has the care, resources, and knowledge she needs to thrive—before, during, and after childbirth.

Maternal and Child Healthcare and Welfare Sensitizations

At Custos Care Foundation, we are deeply committed to maternal and child healthcare and welfare sensitisation. Through advocacy, outreach, and targeted programmes, we have been educating and empowering women across Enugu State to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Key Sensitisation Activities We Have Done:

Community Health Awareness Campaigns
We have conducted sensitisation outreaches in rural and urban communities, educating pregnant women, nursing mothers, and families on:

  • The importance of antenatal and postnatal care
  • Proper nutrition for mothers and babies
  • Safe childbirth practices
  • The benefits of exclusive breastfeeding
  • Family planning and reproductive health

Interventions

  • Custos Care Foundation’s Lifesaving Interventions for Mothers and Newborns

At Custos Care Foundation, we are dedicated to ensuring that mothers and their babies receive the care and support they need, especially in critical situations. Through our maternal and child healthcare interventions, we have provided assistance to several vulnerable families, including:

Baby Nkechi – A Premature Baby’s Fight for Survival
Baby Nkechi was born prematurely, requiring urgent neonatal care to survive. We stepped in to provide medical and financial support for her hospital care, supply essential baby items and financial aid to aid her recovery and support her upkeep.

A Mother of Quadruplets
When a mother gave birth to four babies, we recognised the overwhelming financial and emotional burden and intervened by providing baby care kits, including diapers, clothing, and hygiene supplies, supporting financially for the postnatal medical care for both the mother and her newborns and offering financial assistance to ease the burden on the family.

Another Mother of Quadruplets Who Lost One Baby
In another case, a mother welcomed quadruplets, but tragically, one did not survive. Understanding the gravity of her situation, we supported the surviving three babies with medical care and essentials, provided emotional and psychological support to the grieving mother and assisted with hospital expenses and postnatal care.
